On Friday, the 26th of July, our OLMC school and parish community came together to celebrate our feast day and to honour our grandparents on the Feast day of St Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary and the grandparents of Jesus.
Our celebrations began with open classrooms where grandparents had the opportunity to read to their grandchildren, answer quizzes and create artworks. Perhaps it was the students who were the most excited, thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to spend time in their classrooms with their grandparents. This was followed by a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Denis and Martinho.
Thank you to all of the grandparents who joined us for the special day. The children in our school are very lucky to have such loving grandparents, who after listening to children’s stories are wonderful cooks, great storytellers, super fantastic and energetic babysitters, love a variety of games and most of all spoil and cherish their grandchildren.

Wow! What a busy term of learning Year 5 have had!! In Religion, Year 5 have deepened their understanding of how the Church is a faith community, which honours Mary as mother of God and as one who leads us to Jesus. They explored key pieces of scripture from the Bible that highlight Mary's role in the life of Jesus and learned about the significance of her example of faith and trust in God. In English, the students have stepped into the world of characterisation and letter writing. They’ve been busy crafting letters from the perspectives of characters they’ve read about in our focus novel, August and Jones by Pip Harry. The students have been applying descriptive and figurative language features to develop their letters, writing in the perspective of the main characters. They have explored how character traits can be revealed through dialogue, actions, and thoughts. During Reading, Year 5 have continued to develop their comprehension skills. They've also focused on inferring meaning from contextual clues as well as identifying the main idea and supporting details. In Maths, it’s been all about developing and strengthening a variety of mathematical skills to problem solve number and word problems. Year 5 have been applying their understanding of mathematical concepts to everyday situations enabling them to make realistic connections. This week we have been focusing on Fractions and Percentages. This was a challenging but rewarding week of maths in year 5 as we strived to achieve the best and not give up. In History, we have been exploring the fascinating history of Australian colonies, exploring the reasons behind British colonisation after 1800, such as economic gain, political power, and social factors. Year 5 has looked at daily lives of both early settlers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As well as investigating how the environment has changed over time with the introduction of new flora and fauna. Most recently we have taken a deep dive into significant events like the gold rush and the eureka stockade and how this has impacted Australia. As well as investigating significant people in our Australian history including BushRanger which we were able to share with our Year 4 buddies this week.24 Sep 2024
