Wow! What a busy term of learning Year 5 have had!! In Religion, Year 5 have deepened their understanding of how the Church is a faith community, which honours Mary as mother of God and as one who leads us to Jesus. They explored key pieces of scripture from the Bible that highlight Mary's role in the life of Jesus and learned about the significance of her example of faith and trust in God. In English, the students have stepped into the world of characterisation and letter writing. They’ve been busy crafting letters from the perspectives of characters they’ve read about in our focus novel, August and Jones by Pip Harry. The students have been applying descriptive and figurative language features to develop their letters, writing in the perspective of the main characters. They have explored how character traits can be revealed through dialogue, actions, and thoughts. During Reading, Year 5 have continued to develop their comprehension skills. They've also focused on inferring meaning from contextual clues as well as identifying the main idea and supporting details. In Maths, it’s been all about developing and strengthening a variety of mathematical skills to problem solve number and word problems. Year 5 have been applying their understanding of mathematical concepts to everyday situations enabling them to make realistic connections. This week we have been focusing on Fractions and Percentages. This was a challenging but rewarding week of maths in year 5 as we strived to achieve the best and not give up. In History, we have been exploring the fascinating history of Australian colonies, exploring the reasons behind British colonisation after 1800, such as economic gain, political power, and social factors. Year 5 has looked at daily lives of both early settlers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As well as investigating how the environment has changed over time with the introduction of new flora and fauna. Most recently we have taken a deep dive into significant events like the gold rush and the eureka stockade and how this has impacted Australia. As well as investigating significant people in our Australian history including BushRanger which we were able to share with our Year 4 buddies this week.

Year 4 have had an absolutely superb term 3. In Maths, it's been all hands on deck as the students have explored and manipulated three- dimensional objects. They have been busy creating and building three-dimensional models and objects. From objects made out of sticks and play-dough, to towers created from recycled materials. The students have had a blast entering the world of spatial awareness. They've also left no part of the classroom unscathed when measuring volume and capacity. The students have learnt how to convert capacities from millimetres to litres and vice versa and how to measure and compare items in cubic centimetres. In Religion, Year 4 have enjoyed learning about the sacraments of the Catholic Church, in particular the sacrament of Baptism. They had a wonderful opportunity to delve into a deeper understanding of the symbolism and materials used during Baptism by attending the school parish and listening to an informative presentation led by Fr Albi. The students have used these new learnings to deepen their understanding on their major scripture focus for this term which centred around the baptism of Jesus. In English, our students have become the next generation of creative poets. They've explored different writing techniques used in writing poetry such as imagery, figurative language, alliteration, similes and metaphors. They’ve also composed rhyming couplets and explored free verse poetry. During Reading, Year 4 have been learning to infer meaning within multimodal texts by identifying contextual clues and activating their prior knowledge. Year 4 have also unpacked how to identify the main idea of a text by locating supporting details, topic sentences and opening and closing statements. We cannot forget to mention that many of our brilliant students are now handwriting superstars, having earnt their very own pen licences. What an outstanding achievement! Don't you wish you were back in Year 4 too!
